Enjoyable Day

I spent three hours today at one of my favourite past-times...no, not hooking---that is #1. I went Berry Picking. Even though it is one of the most strenuous, exhausting, back breaking things to do, I still like doing it..Walking on Marsh Land is so uncomfortable as the land is humpy and bumpy, and yes, right now, WET because we have had so much wet weather...It was sunny when I left but by the time I got back it was foggy and damp. I just go ten minutes walk from my house to get those beautiful Bakeapples, also known as Cloudberry. The pet lamb followed me to the area but when he saw that I was not about to share with him, he just up and left and went back home, baaing along the way...I guess he was fed up with me but it would need to be a bigger animal than he to have me give up those berries. Some of you may not realize that this container holds one and a half gallons of berries and that is not much for the length of time it takes to pick them...just remember they are not picked in handfuls as blueberries, cranberries or many other kinds but just ONE at a time and they are not always close together either...Lots of walking involved in this sport...I was exhausted by the time I arrived home but I will go again as soon as the weather is suitable.

  1. Wow Anne, seems like a fair amount are ripe. I haven't gone yet but I guess I will have to get my bxxt in gear and get on the marsh. Looks so good. I just made a bakeapple cheesecake yesterday with the very last of my last year's pickings. Hope you are going to Woody Island.... let me know.

  3. Melaine, I plan to make a cheesecake tomorrow. I saw your recipe and that is the one Tom's Mom always used. Mine is a little different but no bake, as well. Will have to share it when I make one and post a picture...

Kim, they are a berry that a lot of people seem to have to acquire a taste for. For us here in our area.... we grew up eating them.. I believe that is one of the first things we ate when we were old enough....Bread and Bakeapple Jam and of course, Mom's delicious pies...

  4. While I don't go berry picking, I do appreciate the hard work. And to top it off, bakeapples are only three inches off the ground. Back breaking work!

Weather in western NL not the best but at least, we are getting a break between rainy days.

  5. Anne,
I'm chuckling about the poor little lamb! Those berries must be a sought after treat! I haven't heard of them before. Do they remind of you of any other berry as far as flavor? They look lovely in that huge bowl! Enjoy the fruits of your back breaking labor my friend!

  6. Cathy, people pick those berries and sell them for $35.00 a Gallon...If anyone offered me one hundred dollars on Saturday, I wouldn't have parted with them. I can't think of any other berry that they resemble in taste. I think they are kind of unique...Lovely in cheesecake or cream puffs.
